Children's Services : Certificate III in Children's Services (CHC30708)

This qualification covers workers who use organisational policies, procedures and individual children’s profiles to plan activities and provide care to children, facilitating their leisure and play and enabling them to achieve their developmental outcomes.  Depending on the setting, workers may work under direct supervision or autonomously; the worker may also have limited supervisory responsibilities of volunteers. Workers at this level are required to have an understanding of Indigenous culture and history and to work with local communities in the provision of services.

Career Opportunities

This course provides students with the skills, attributes and knowledge to be able to undertake job roles that may include; child care worker, child care assistant, family day care worker, playgroup supervisor, nanny etc.

Pathways to Further Studies

By successfully completing a Certificate III in Children’s Services the student is eligible to continue their studies and enrol in a Diploma program.

Entry Requirements (People with disabilities are encouraged to apply)

There are no formal entry requirements although it is expected that students will have basic literacy and numeracy skills and a genuine interest in caring for children.  Students undertaking work placement will be required to complete a ‘Working with children check’ and Police Check.

Information Session

A Victorian Training Group representative will meet with you to conduct an enrolment session and assist you in making an informed decision about undertaking this course. They will provide you with a Student Handbook, which must be read before completing the enrolment documentation. Training will only commence once completed enrolment documents and payment have been received by VTG.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you have previous qualifications or relevant work or life experience, you may be eligible for exemptions in your course through our Recognition process.  Please ask your VTG training consultant. 

Credit Transfer (CT)

You will receive a credit transfer if you have completed units which are identical to the units within your Certificate III in Children's Services qualification from another RTO.

Course Duration

The duration of training for new and existing workers is flexible to accommodate the worker’s learning style and employment arrangements. On average, it takes workplace based students approximately 12 months to complete this course.

For classroom based students, delivery will take up to six months; consisting of three days per week for 10 weeks in the classroom, plus up to 210 hours of practical placement. 

 

Qualification Cost

VTG in partnership with State/Territory and the Federal Government may be able to access a subsidy/incentive to cover the cost of the qualification dependent on your circumstances. Delivery Method

Employment based
Delivery will comprise of supervised on the job training plus a number of training and assessment visits conducted by our qualified and experienced industry training consultants. This qualification may also be delivered as a Traineeship; check with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) for eligibility.

Classroom
This course is delivered in a classroom setting. The classroom will be considered a simulated work place, so that behaviours, language used, clothing and attire worn, and all other aspects of the classroom sessions, will be considered “as if we were at work”.

Mixed Mode
Mixed Mode learning is a mixture of structured independent study and compulsory workshops. A practical placement component of the training will be included for those students who are not currently employed in the industry.

Assessment Method

Assessment will be undertaken in accordance with the relevant applicable legislation.  Students will be provided with comprehensive learner guides.  Your knowledge and skills will be assessed using a combination of methods which may include written activities, verbal questions, projects, presentations, observations and practical demonstrations.

Qualification Requirements

The Certificate III in Children’s Services CHC30708 requires 15 units of competency:

11 core units
CHCCHILD401A Identify and respond to children and young people at risk
CHCCN301A Ensure the health and safety of children
CHCCN302A Provide care for children 
CHCCN303A Contribute to provision of nutritionally balanced food in a safe and hygienic manner
CHCCS400A Work within a relevant legal and ethical framework
CHCFC301A Support the development of children
CHCIC301D Interact effectively with children
CHCPR301A Provide experiences to support children’s play and learning
CHCPR303D Develop understanding of children’s interests and developmental needs
HLTFA301B Apply first aid
HLTOHS300A Contribute to OHS processes

4 elective units
CHCCN305A   Provide care for babies *
CHCORG303A  Participate effectively in the work environment
CHCRF301D  Work effectively with families to care for the child
HLTHIR403B  Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
* This unit may be mandatory in some jurisdictions.

Qualifications

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised.  Upon successful completion of all competencies of your course, you will be awarded Certificate III in Children's Services.  A Statement of Attainment will be issued in cases where there is a partial completion of a qualification.
